There is news of a massive fire in a coal mine in Kazakhstan. The company said that when the fire broke out in the Kostenko coal mine, about 252 people were working there. The news is also that Due to this massive fire, 21 people were burnt to death. More than 25 people are said to be missing. ArcelorMittal Temirtau, the company operating the mine, gave this information in a statement.

Possibility of fire methane gas

ArcelorMittal Temirtau is the local representative of Luxembourg-based multinational ArcelorMittal, the world’s second-largest steelmaker. It is feared that methane gas could be the cause of the fire.ArcelorMittal Temirtau operates eight coal mines in the Karaganda region.

There was a fire in the month of August also

The same mine of the company also caught fire in August in which four miners died. Apart from this, the company also has the responsibility of operating four iron ore mines in Central and Northern Kazakhstan. Meanwhile, in November 2022, five people died due to methane gas leakage at another workplace.

The company concluded on the fire incident

The country’s Prosecutor General’s Office has also announced an investigation into possible safety violations at the coal mine. Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said on Saturday that his country was ending investment cooperation with ArcelorMittal Temirtau. The company, in a statement, expressed its condolences to the deceased and said its efforts now are to ensure that the affected employees receive care and rehabilitation along with support from government authorities.
