Delhi: Read, first ED also raids here on digital news website and related journalists

The digital news website News Click and some journalists associated with it have read here. Special cell raids of Delhi Police are done. Red is operating at several locations in Delhi-NCR. ED has previously conducted raids regarding the funding of news clicks. Special Cell is conducting raids after some of their input. Apart from Delhi, searches are also being conducted at several bases in Noida and Ghaziabad. The special cell of Delhi Police has recovered dump data from laptops and mobile phones of some journalists with news clicks The Special Cell has registered a new case and started the investigation. It is alleged that Partal is receiving funding from China to work.

Illegal funding case

In 2021, the Economic Crimes Branch of Delhi Police first filed a lawsuit regarding illegal funding received by News Click. This suspected funding was received by news clicks through Chinese companies. After this, the ED started the trial by filing a case. However, the High Court at that time relieved the arrest of the promoters of News Click.

Money laundering case investigation

In August, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) attached a Delhi-based flat to Prabir Purkayastha, editor-in-chief of News Click, in an investigation into the money laundering case. Indeed, in August, the American newspaper New York Times claimed that News Click was part of a global network that received funding from US billionaire Neville Roy Singham, Which reportedly works closely with the Chinese media. The ED also conducted raids on Purkayastha’s bases in September 2021.

China connection charge

Earlier allegations have been made by the ED that foreign funding received by News Click violates the FCRA i.e. the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. At the same time, the central agency had alleged that the funding was also being used in anti-country activities. The ED indicated that Singham, who lived in China, had illegally given Rs 38 crore to run the news click in China-backed information in India.
